Asthma and Pregnancy
When an expectant mom has asthma, what are the possible long-term effects on her child?
Keeping asthma under control during pregnancy is important to the health of both mother and baby. Now, new research shows the long-term effects the condition may have on growing children.
Women who suffered from asthma during their pregnancies were studied … and their children were then followed for six years. The results? Maternal asthma during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk for a variety of issues in children including: including:
- infectious diseases
- endocrine and metabolic disorders
- and problems with the nervous system, ears, respiratory system, digestive system, and even the skin.
Women with asthma need to be closely monitored during pregnancy by both their obstetrician and their family physician or internist.
