Make Your Maternity Photos Pop with These Props

maternity photo props

If you’ve been on social media in the last decade, you’ve seen at least a few (if not a few hundred) maternity pictures. Getting your picture captured when you’re pregnant is one of the highlights of the motherhood journey for many moms-to-be, and they want the end result to be captivating. With how prevalent baby bump photos are nowadays, it can feel difficult to find a theme or props that are unique to you and your family. So here are a few ideas to do just that.

Flower Power

Many people are quick to think of flowers for weddings, but not as many think of them when it comes to maternity photos. Yet a stunning floral arrangement can provide the only prop you need, if selected with care. Consider the color of flowers you choose, and whether you want the colors to fit with your theme or to be symbolic. Another way to use flowers is to choose a backdrop that is full of nature’s beauty. Maybe there’s a peach orchard nearby, bursting with blossoms, or a field of wildflowers. Any of these settings can make your pictures truly unique.

Or if you don’t want your scenery to be floral, consider incorporating a flower crown into your outfit. Flowers are very feminine, and can make a glowing mama feel especially delicate and pretty throughout the shoot. They also add a lovely touch of elegance and personalization to the end result, and can add special meaning if you choose ones that are symbolic.

Tiny Feet

There are few things that people love to coo over more than tiny baby toes! If you want to elicit an “awww” response when people see your photos, consider using some baby shoes as props. You can choose a pair that’s reflective of your baby’s gender and your own personal style, whether that’s a pair of Converse sneakers, sparkly Mary Janes or trendy moccasins.

The best part is that baby shoes can be used in a wide variety of ways throughout the shoot. You can put them between your shoes and your partner’s, and have a shot that only shows the ground to your ankles. This can be especially sweet, highlighting how small and fragile your baby will be.

Another idea is to use paint or stickers to write your baby’s expected birth month and year on the bottom of their shoes, and then your own birth month and year on the bottom of yours (and even have your partner do the same). Then you can sit down and stretch your legs out, showing the bottom of your shoes and holding up the baby shoes so your whole family’s birth months and years (and of course, your beautiful baby bump!) are on display.

The Written Word

When thinking of props, don’t forget about inspiring quotes or your thoughts and prayers for your little one. You can use a cute chalkboard and handwrite your hopes for your baby, and include this as a sentimental and meaningful addition to the photos. You could also write down your favorite quotes on a sticky note, and stick them to a wall behind you. This can be a fun and gorgeous way to share what’s on your hearts and minds before your son or daughter arrives.

Another idea is to use a children’s book in your photos. You and your partner can be looking at the book together, or it can be set up in an aesthetically pleasing way in the backdrop of your photos. Either way, a cute book can set a sweet tone for your photos.

Hopefully these prop ideas get your wheels turning, but whatever items you decide to incorporate in your pictures… just remember this shoot is all about you, your baby and your love (and possibly your partner too). You want to wear something that makes you feel like the beautiful mommy you are, and set a tone of love and warmth for the little one who will be gracing your home soon. If you keep that in mind, you’re sure to end up with photos that you’ll treasure forever.
