The Role of a Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula

Do you know the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula? How do doulas add value to the birthing process? We discuss these questions and more in the highlights from our “Doula or Don’t” panel discussion.

The birth doula is a certified professional who gives emotional and physical support, as well as information. The doula works alongside the pregnant woman and family. They help them explore all the options available within their community. The doula will be there for the birth and also a little bit in the post-partum period.

Postpartum doulas come in and support the family in the first few weeks after the baby is born, when you come home.

Doulas also enhance the role of your partner. They don’t replace them. Doulas provide support and give your partner clues on how to best support you. Doulas bring the normalcy to the un-normal things that happen in labor.

Our Expert:
Ana Paula Markel is founder of Bini Birth, a certified doula, and the president-elect of Dona International – the oldest and most reputable organization that trains and certifies doulas.
