Uptown Village: Childbirth Services for a Multicultural Community
Perinatal Health Professionals
Meet Myla Flores, the cofounder of Uptown Village Cooperative, a group of multicultural, perinatal health professionals serving upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Having a multicultural group of perinatal professionals is imperative so that people can feel that their care providers are represented in their own culture. In many cases, this gives great comfort to the person receiving care. A lot of families have less resources to care, and they believe Doulas should be accessible for all. Their hope in creating greater access, is that people will be able to positively influence their experience in childbirth, promoting better outcomes for the family and the baby.
Doulas Serving Multicultural Communities
Some cultures, African-American cultures, can have a greater risk for preterm labor and range of things. It’s important to truly address this from the community standpoint. They have Doula’s living and working with in their own community, really supporting the environments close to them. It’s also important, ideally, to create sustainability for the Doulas who are serving in their communities that need it the most.
These are also the areas where women and families can be less financially abundant, and often times not have access to the care that’s necessary for them. They aim to support women and families of color to have these resources to positively influence their pregnancies, their experiences and even the outcomes…positive outcomes for labor and birth. That’s just a part of who they are and what they do.
