The Importance of Self Care – For Moms

As moms, we spend so much time taking care of others; it’s critical to take care of ourselves too. We are taught as a society, that it’s selfish to put yourself first. The truth is it’s actually the opposite of selfish. Your self-care is vital. We can’t take care of our family if we’re not taking care of ourselves.

There are a few critical times in life when we need to take care of ourselves – especially after giving birth or when our kids are sick. Have compassion for yourself. Give yourself permission to take care of you. There’s an emotional piece too. Your family picks up on your energy. In moments where you feel stress, overwhelmed or you’re upset or reactive – your kids know it too.

Offer them a calm, filled-cup mom that’s happy and ready for the day, as opposed to one who’s depleted, which brings your patience level way down. We all know what happens when moms have low patience level. We beat ourselves up for the whole rest of the day because we reacted when we didn’t want to react. It’s just a snowball of events.

Self-care for a mom can be as simple as literally taking a five-minute shower. Maybe it’s putting on music maybe it’s telling your family that you need five minutes just to go somewhere. Take a few deep breaths. Come back to your family refilled rather than depleted.
