Mediterranean Diet

Studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet which includes plenty of fish, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil – may lower your risk of strokes and Alzheimer’s disease. How does it work?

Researchers measured how closely each person followed a Mediterranean diet. All of the volunteers also placed their heads into a special MRI machine that checked for damage in the small blood vessels in their brains. People who stuck more closely to the Mediterranean diet had less blood vessel damage.

The diet may offer protection due to the greater amounts of monounsaturated fat that it provides, along with less saturated fat. Monounsaturated fat which is found in olive oil – is considered to be better for you than the saturated fat in red meat and full-fat dairy foods.
