Window Shop Your Way to a Life You Love!

by Julie Zeff

Not only can you window shop for style, but you can window shop for your life. Window shopping in others lives is one great tool to help you figure out what a life you love looks and feels like! Most of us do it anyway. You know when you see others who look like they have it all together, or have something that catches your eye – some article of clothing, kind of car, home, vacation, relationship with their child, spouse, etc.? You know those sensations you feel in your body when you want that, too? That’s great information about what you want more of and that’s some fabulous window shopping!

Many moms label that experience in their body as jealousy. And, when it stops there, it is a pretty yucky, unproductive feeling. Feeling jealous definitely won’t get you living a life you love. The good news is that you can transform jealousy into something productive and even empowering. You can use it as a trigger to make positive changes in your own life. Let jealousy inspire you instead of deflate you.

Practice these 4 steps below to take you from jealousy and inadequacy to empowering to living your vivid and extraordinary life. It is fun and it is free.

  1. Name it! – Window shop all you want – give yourself full permission – you probably do it anyway. You might as well enjoy it or use it to help you get what you want in your life. Get curious about others who have something in their lives that you want more of. Name it! Get specific. What do you want more of? For example: More respect, love and laughter in the relationships with my kids or more fun and intimacy with my spouse, more vacations, a vacation home, anything…

  2. BodyTruth! – Look to your body to see what excites you and enlivens you when you think about having it yourself. Take the attention off the other person and bring it back to you. Is this something that you’d really like to have in your life? Remember love it or leave it! Does it bring you joy, excitement or peace when you visualize having it yourself? If so, great. Then head to the next step.  Don’t just stop here!

  3. Choose it! Create it! Visualize it! – You, too can have what you thought looked fabulous in the window. What can you do today, next week and next month to choose and create an energy, environment or situation for yourself that will help you get what you desire? What are you willing to change and do differently to get what you want? If you really want it, you absolutely can choose it and then create it. Visualize yourself having, doing, and being it! Here are some examples but please don’t let these constrain you. The sky’s the limit… If you saw a mama and child playing in a fun and loving way at the park and you realized you wanted more of that, then who do you want to be and how do you want to show up differently that will create that dynamic and energy with your child? If you really want a vacation home maybe it means scaling down your life at home, changing jobs or even moving to a different city. Make some new choices to get yourself just what you most desire.

  4. Fears Aside! – Keep moving your fear, doubts or negative self-talk aside – I call these ogres. They are just there to keep you feeling miserable, jealous, like a failure or ineffectual. Their job is to keep you away from living a life you love. Send them to the moon, put them in a box, bury them, send them to an Ogre party or just ignore them and keep enjoying that window shopping and being curious.

Enjoy window shopping and creating a life you love…not just one you like! We all deserve and can have one!
