Women Thrive Worldwide

Help women feed the world. Women Thrive Worldwide believes that investing in women is the key to ending global hunger. Globally, 2.5 billion people live on less than $2 a day and 925 million people live in hunger. Investing in women farmers – such as providing them with information, land rights, organizing support, time-savings systems, and better access to public-private partnerships – not only benefits women and their families economically, but also increases overall global crop production. Women can lift themselves from poverty and can feed the world; they just need our support.

The Challenge

The enormous challenge of feeding the world falls upon small-scale farmers-the majority of whom are women. Yet women farmers often lack access to rights and resources-such as land and credit-that could help them feed the world. We should be investing in women, however, programs that empower women and girls living in poverty are on the chopping block.

How will this project solve this problem?

Women Thrive will protect international aid programs, which account for less than 1% of the federal budget, and ensure that they benefit both women and men. Cutting programs like Feed the Future does nothing to fix the budget and jeopardizes millions of lives living in hunger and poverty worldwide. Investing in Women Thrive helps protect programs important to women and girls and can help make hunger history. After all, when you teach a woman to fish, everyone eats.

Potential Long Term Impact

Research and experience have shown that women in developing countries are more likely to use income for their families’ food, healthcare and education-helping to lift entire communities out of poverty. Additionally, investing in women farmers has huge returns: According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, if women in developing countries had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase yields on their farms by 20-30% and lift 100-150 million people out of hunger!
