5 Ways to Redecorate Your Teen’s Bedroom
If it has been several years since you updated your teen’s bedroom, it’s probably time to give it a thorough redo. In addition to helping your child express his or her independence, redecorating a bedroom is a wonderful way for the two of you to spend time together.
To give your teen’s room a more mature look without draining your savings account, consider the following ideas:
1. The Power of Paint
Paint is one of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to make a significant change in a room. Allow your teen to choose the color for the redo; from Windex blue and Tang orange to basic black, it is a great way for your teen to express some individuality. Your teen can choose a few colors; maybe one for the walls and another for the ceiling. (Remember, walls can always be painted back to a more neutral color once they’re off to college!)
2. Think to the Future
Yes, it is hard to think about your baby heading off to college, but try thinking of your bedroom update as practice for your teen’s apartment life. If space allows, consider purchasing a small couch, colorful bean bag chairs and even a small fridge to hold drinks and snacks during late-night study sessions. You can also find ways to repurpose existing pieces of furniture. For example, paint those plain bookcases a color to complement the new walls, or add modern hardware to dressers and end tables.
For storage, purchase some under-bed totes on wheels that can hold tons of stuff without taking up valuable floor and shelf space.
3. Update the Window Coverings
The days of your child getting up with the roosters are over; now, you have a teen who loves to sleep until noon on the weekends. Help block the morning sunlight and keep your snooze-loving teen happy by upgrading the window coverings. Look for high-quality shades as an investment for the future once your teen moves out. After all, this could be your future craft room or office.
4. Select New Bedding
Another easy and relatively economical way to update a bedroom is to get new bedding. Once the room has been re-painted, let your teen choose a new set of sheets and comforter that matches or contrasts with the new wall and ceiling. Look for a set that comes with a comforter, sheets and pillowcases to make sure that everything goes together nicely.
5. Add Accents with Accessories
Beyond the basics of furniture and bedding, a teen’s room really comes alive with its decorative accents. Remind yourself that small holes can always be patched up later on, and allow your child to hang plenty of pictures and posters on the freshly-painted walls. You can also purchase a large bulletin board for pinning notes, pictures and calendars. Lastly, get some large throw pillows for the floor and some new frames for his or her favorite group selfies.
