5 Breastfeeding Positions for New Moms

Do you know there are 5 different breastfeeding positions? Sometimes new moms won’t feel comfortable breastfeeding one-way and all of a sudden they learn another position, like the football hold, and… there they go! They say, “Oh my God, if I knew it would be so comfortable, I would have done this.” A lot of people get stuck in one position, or they learn one position, on day one in the hospital and never try again.

Watch for an in-depth description. See how adjusting your position can help with comfort and milk-flow. Plus, best practices for using a breastfeeding pillow.

Try one of these 5 basic breastfeeding positions:

  1. Laid-back position: Great for early breastfeeding or a mom who has overactive letdown.
  2. Cross-cradle position: The most common position – support breast with a c-hold or u-hold.
  3. Cradle hold: Some babies prefer this.
  4. Football hold: Hold baby same side as breast with tummy to tummy. Great after a c-section or with twins.
  5. Side-lying position: Laying down on side.
